November 16 marked the grand opening of the Youth Hall, significantly expanding the business area of the Wangfujing Department Store from its original 18,000 square meters to a sprawling 40,000 square meters. With the unveiling of this new cultural landmark, the renovation of the historic building was also completed, attracting internationally renowned brands like Lan Zi and DuPont to set up shop. This rejuvenation has breathed new life into what has long been hailed as China’s “first store,†a testament to its enduring legacy.
Wangfujing Street in Beijing has always been synonymous with tradition and modernity, and the department store, established in 1954, stands as a proud symbol of this duality. Known affectionately as the "Number One Store" of New China, it has consistently ranked alongside other prestigious institutions like Dongfeng Market, Longfu Building, and Xidan Market. Post-World War II, the nascent nation embarked on an economic recovery, and the store quickly became a bustling hub for both locals and international visitors alike. During holidays, the store would see throngs of eager shoppers, with lines stretching out the door. Recognizing the need for a larger space, authorities began construction in 1954, which garnered significant attention in the press. The People's Daily even published a detailed architectural rendering, highlighting the store’s grandeur.
The architectural design of the department store reflects the vision of some of the country’s leading architects, blending modernity with traditional Chinese aesthetics. Notably, the eaves feature a beast head motif every ten meters, while intricate carvings adorn the exterior walls, echoing Beijing’s rich historical tapestry. Inside, a striking bronze statue pays tribute to Zhang Binggui, a celebrated model worker and pioneering salesperson. Known for his exceptional service—“a handful of sugar, perfectly measuredâ€â€”Zhang’s dedication to his craft became legendary. His legacy lives on through his son, Zhang Chao, who continues to uphold the same values at the store. There is a poignant story of a regular customer who fondly recalled how Zhang Binggui once went out of his way to fetch a simple candy box for her, an act that she cherished deeply.
The department store underwent another transformation in 1994, transitioning to a joint-stock company and listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. This move raised over 1.1 billion yuan, enabling the store to expand its footprint across major cities like Guangzhou and Wuhan. Today, what was once a single-store operation has evolved into a multi-city chain, solidifying its place as a major player in China’s retail landscape. The Wangfujing Department Store remains a cornerstone of Beijing’s commercial heritage, blending history with innovation to continue inspiring generations of customers and employees alike.
