tried and true pattern: liesl + co. everyday skirt

Are you a beginner sewist, someone getting back into sewing, or simply searching for a pattern that countless women have successfully used before? Claire (a member of our Advisors Circle) is here to share her trusted Liesl + Co. sewing pattern. Over to you, Claire!

I first sewed my Everyday Skirt at the start of my sewing adventure, about three years ago. I loved it so much that I made another one just a few months later. After creating two more, I can confidently say this is an absolutely reliable pattern for me. Let’s dive into my different versions.

Trusted and True: Liesl + Co. Everyday Skirt

The first time I made the Everyday Skirt, I chose a very lightweight quilting cotton by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller. I fell head over heels for the bright blue floral print, and the breezy, effortless style of the Everyday Skirt seemed perfect for it. As you’d expect, the instructions were fantastic and gave me the confidence to believe I'd actually created something decent—something I didn’t often feel at the beginning of my sewing journey! (By the way, I did accidentally sew the front piece upside down. I only noticed at the end and joked to my husband it was intentional so I could see the flowers the right way up. Haha.)

My second Everyday Skirt was made using a slightly heavier quilting cotton, and it quickly became a favorite. I think the secret to its success lies in the combination of the flat fronted waistband and the elasticated waistband. It looks polished but feels incredibly comfortable—exactly what you want in a wardrobe staple.

As autumn approached, I began thinking about making a new maxi skirt. I had this stunning Cotton and Steel rayon challis tucked away and thought it would be ideal for an Everyday Skirt adaptation. To create the longer version, I measured the desired length, adjusted the pattern pieces accordingly, and redrawn them from the top edges to the new hem corners. This tweak slightly narrowed the hips for some pieces, but since there’s plenty of ease built into the pattern, it didn’t affect the overall fit significantly.

I adore the finished skirt and have worn it constantly with all kinds of outfits. Whether paired with a cozy sweater or a simple blouse, it’s become a go-to piece in my wardrobe.

My final version of the Everyday Skirt was made for a holiday party. I had purchased this gorgeous cupro/viscose twill from Blackbird Fabrics and couldn’t resist the bronze version, even though I worried it might clash with my pale Scottish complexion. Turns out, I was correct about that, but when I finally saw and touched the fabric, I was blown away by its liquid bronze drape. I decided then and there that a skirt would work just fine—it wouldn’t be near my face, after all!

I mulled over ways to make it more festive, such as altering the length and adding a pocket detail, but inspiration struck when I saw a real-world (RTW) skirt with a sash. The idea immediately resonated with me, and I knew I had to incorporate it somehow.

For this skirt, I doubled the waistband width to create a bold statement. Then, I cut two long rectangular sash pieces based on the finished waistband width plus seam allowances. After sewing the ends together and turning them inside out, I attached the sashes to the waistband side seams and tied them into a grand, fancy knot. I’m thrilled with how it turned out and can’t wait to wear it this Christmas!
