tried and true pattern: liesl + co. everyday skirt

Are you a beginner in the world of sewing, someone who's returning to the craft after taking a break, or perhaps you're just searching for a reliable pattern that countless sewists have found success with? Claire (one of our Advisors Circle members) is here to share her go-to Liesl + Co. sewing pattern. Over to you, Claire!

I embarked on my sewing journey a few years back, and my very first project was the Everyday Skirt. I was so thrilled with how it turned out that I made a second one just a few months later. After completing a couple more versions, I can confidently say this pattern has become a staple in my wardrobe. Let’s dive into the different iterations I’ve created over time.

Tried and True: Liesl + Co. Everyday Skirt

For my first Everyday Skirt, I chose a lightweight quilting cotton from Sarah Jane for Michael Miller. The bright blue floral print caught my eye, and I thought it paired beautifully with the skirt’s relaxed yet chic design. The instructions were spot-on, making me feel proud of what I’d created—something I didn’t often experience when I was just starting out. (By the way, I did manage to sew the front piece upside down. I only noticed once I was done and joked to my husband that it was intentional so I could admire the flowers the right way up. He bought it… or so I thought!)

My second version was crafted from a slightly heavier quilting cotton, and it quickly became a favorite in my closet. What I love most about this pattern is its combination of a flat fronted waistband with an elasticated interior. It looks polished but feels incredibly comfortable—a winning formula if ever there was one.

As autumn approached, I began thinking about creating a new maxi skirt. I had some Cotton and Steel rayon challis tucked away and decided it was perfect for an Everyday Skirt makeover. To achieve the desired length, I carefully measured and redrawn the pattern pieces, which subtly adjusted the hip measurements. Fortunately, the pattern includes plenty of ease, so the fit remained flawless.

The result was stunning, and I’ve worn this skirt constantly since finishing it. Whether paired with casual tops or dressed up for special occasions, it’s become my go-to piece.

For my final version, I made a skirt for a holiday party using a beautiful cupro/viscose twill from Blackbird Fabrics. The bronze colorway caught my attention, but I worried it might clash with my fair Scottish complexion. Despite my reservations, the fabric’s liquid drape left me speechless, so I decided to embrace it—not too close to my face, of course!

I toyed with ideas to give it a festive touch, such as altering the length or adding a pocket detail. Then I stumbled upon an RTW skirt with a sash and instantly loved the concept. I decided to incorporate that idea into my design.

For this skirt, I doubled the waistband width to create a bold statement. Next, I cut two long rectangular pieces for the sashes, ensuring they matched the waistband dimensions plus seam allowances. After sewing them together and turning them inside out, I attached the sashes to the waistband seams and tied them into a grand knot. I adore the final look and can’t wait to wear it this Christmas!
