Sun Yat-sen's Calligraphy Rise Four Times in One Year

In 2004, the value of Sun Yat-sen's "Fun" calligraphy piece fell to 121,000 yuan. By 2009, it had climbed to 504,000 yuan, and in 2010, it skyrocketed to 2.016 million yuan. This sharp increase reflects the growing interest in Sun Yat-sen's works, especially those linked to the Xinhai Revolution. The rising value of his calligraphy not only highlights its historical significance but also mirrors the evolving perception of his legacy over time. The "Fun" piece was originally written by Sun Yat-sen in March 1913, when he was in Kumamoto, Japan. It was auctioned three times within seven years. In the spring auction of 2004, it was estimated between 20,000 and 30,000 yuan, eventually selling for 121,000 yuan. In 2009, with the addition of Japanese letters confirming its provenance, the price jumped to 504,000 yuan. Then, in 2010, it reached a record high of 2.016 million yuan at auction. Another significant figure in this market is Yu Ren Ben, known as “Northern in the South.” A prominent modern calligrapher and a participant in the Xinhai Revolution, he later served as dean of the Kuomintang Supervisory Institute after the Northern Expedition. His works have been highly sought after since the 1980s. In 2010, one of his cursive four-screen pieces sold for 2.184 million yuan at Chinese Guardian, setting a new benchmark for right-handed calligraphy. According to Xiao Qinxue, director of the Documentary Professional Committee at the Wuhan Collectors’ Association, the market for historical artifacts tends to surge before major anniversaries. Limited supply combined with increased demand from both local and international collectors often leads to rapid price appreciation. For instance, the upcoming centenary of the Xinhai Revolution has attracted foreign investors with substantial capital, further fueling the market. As a result, prices for related items are expected to rise even more. Some institutions have also capitalized on the trend. Commemorative publications and stamps related to the Xinhai Revolution have seen significant price increases. Recently, a company ordered 1,000 sets of commemorative stamps issued in 1981 for the 70th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. Originally priced at just 0.24 yuan each, these stamps were distributed in large quantities—over 10 million. Today, their value has soared to 25 yuan per set, showcasing the long-term appreciation of historically significant collectibles.
